Windows 7 has changed the game when it comes to remote desktop. Neowin.net blogged about the new features about a year ago. Click here to check out their post. I, too, was blown away by what’s now possible in Remote Desktop. Some of the new features include:

Windows 7 Aero support

Direct 2D & Direct 3D 10.1 application support

True multi-monitor support

RDP Core Performance Improvements

Multimedia enhancements

Media Foundation support

DirectShow support

Low Latency audio playback support

Bi-directional audio support

I noticed one, seemingly insignificant, but very cool new feature that wasn’t mentioned at Neowin.net. Have you ever used Remote Dekstop to get into a network…and then used it again to get to another computer within that network? If so, you’ve probably noticed that the minimize bar at the top doubles over itself; making it next to impossible to minimize one remote machine without minimizing the other while in full-screen mode. Remote Desktop now lets you slide the bar at the top; making it much easier to minimize one session to get to another. Thanks Microsoft! It hasn’t gone unnoticed and it’s appreciated!

@Choreboy responded to my blog post and mentioned a universal solution that he found here. I downloaded, scanned with Avast (no viruses), installed & rescanned (still clean). It worked great! It claims to work on Vista & XP as well, but I haven’t tested it.

Run program & you’re done. Happy RDP-ing.

I have a home brew home theater PC running Windows Vista Ultimate x64. It’s connected to my 40″ Samsung in the living room and pretty much runs Windows Media Center all the time.

Every now and then, I have the need to remote into this box from another computer in the house or from a computer remotely when traveling. I like to do so without disrupting those who may be watching TV at the time. I had been using a fix that I found here. However, when I installed service pack 2, my little multiple remote desktop session patch stopped working. I dug around and found this site, which claimed to have the fix but didn’t work. After reading a bit, I replaced the termsrv.dll from AndrewBlock.net and replaced it with the termsrv.dll from RapidShare. I ran the script and VOILA!

This is working for me on Vista x64 with SP2. Hope this comes in handy for another.
